A peaceful, pleasant afternoon in the woodland scene of Linton Green is disturbed when a brutal murder takes place. But thanks to an unseen witness, the killer may be caught, and the witness turns out to be a blessing in disguise. This is the story of Thomas Pedley, a gifted artist who paints what he sees from memory.

The mystery is great, and the way it's solved is clever. So far, so good. The characters are a bit dull, but there are notes of interest. Unlike Agatha Christie and G. K. Chesterton, Freeman creates an African character who is complex, and not either a caricature or a racist emblem, and that's a big deal for this era. I came to Freeman because I have run out of Agatha Christies, and love the puzzles and the typical (somewhat two-dimensional but reliably interesting) British characters that populate them. The puzzle here is first rate, and kept me reading on to the end, but, surprisingly, Freeman doesn't outline the motive, which is always key in a mystery. So I ended satisfied about the whodunnit, but very unsatisfied as to WHY the person did it. I could construe my own motives, but they were all complicated. That docked a star, as even the lesser Christies generally have a strong and well thought out motive.

Mystery within a mystery. A lot of set up information but worth every word of it in the end. Just sit back and enjoy the read. I have purchased a few more by Mr. Freeman.
Evocative atmosphere, strong narrative, complicated mystery just what I was looking for! It was like going back in a time machine.
This is my absolute favorite Thorndyke story. I was caught up in the action from page 1. the twist at the end of the novel was just made for the movies....indeed, I kept thinking how would I film this story. Hmmm.
Wow...!! What a complicated mystery to solve..!! Very well written and you could follow along as it happens..!! Clues, clues and more clues..! Very good...!!!
I like these old fashioned procedural mysteries with old fashioned forensic science. Dr. Thorndyke is a classic. But slow and naive perhaps by today’s standard.
I have read many of Freeman's mysteries but , the Jacob Street Mystery is by far the best and most thrilling one he wrote. Usually it will take

me a few days to finish one of his mysteries but I started this one

one morning and finished it that afternoon, not even taking time out

for lunch. It concerns a very talented artist and his new neighbor

who professes to be an artist but she is seemingly the most untalented

artist he or anyone else has ever seen and therein lies a mystery

with more twists and turns than you could imagine. Freeman's books

can be hard to find but if you love a good mystery with much

imagination, I suggest you track all of his you can find.
I have read most of Freeman's Thorndyke mysteries, and they never fail to fascinate. There are always a few facts that are "behind the scenes," but if the reader is clever enough to figure out what is happening those facts could be deduced. I have never been that clever.

In this story it is hard to see how the opening scenes are relevant to the following story, but the reader should not lose sight of them. Tom Pedley is an artist. A new neighbor insinuates herself into his life, much against his wishes, but a friendship develops. Another two friends of Tom's are drawn into this circle. Lotta, the neighbor, is a self-proclaimed artist, but no one can take that seriously. Her "art" is so laughable that her friends don't know how to react. She seems to regard her efforts seriously, but everyone else thinks it's a joke. But when Lotta suddenly decides to leave town, her friends think it's probably her quirky personality at work. Several weeks later, when a dead woman is discovered in Lotta's house, it is certainly a shock that the dead woman isn't Lotta after all. Who could it possibly be? Yet another layer of confusing facts are presented.

John Thorndyke doesn't make an appearance until nearly two-thirds of the way into the story. There are so many threads of mystery intertwined that it's hard to figure out the answer to each situation without trying to make sense of how they could possibly relate to each other. By this point there have been a couple more deaths, seemingly unrelated, but Thorndyke has so many lines of inquiry going it takes a master detective to follow. As previously mentioned, nearly every pertinent fact has been mentioned at some point. It is fascinating to see how every one of them weave together to form a complete picture.
